Jones retained his NABA light heavyweight belt with
a twelve round unanimous decision victory over
Thomas Reid on Friday night at the Lowell Memorial
Auditorium in Lowell, MA. Scores of the bout were
116-114, 117-111, and 115-113. Jones, rated number 4
in the WBA, was very aggressive in the early rounds
of the fight landing several left and right hook
combinations on Reid. He was able to methodically
cut off the ring and force Reid into the ropes,
where he would continue to land hooks.
Reid was
getting punished early in the fight from fighting in
close with Jones, allowing Jones to land hooks to
the body. The ring veteran, Reid mounted a comeback
in the middle rounds as he was using his jab to
setup the right hook. Through the use of his jab,
Reid was able to keep a distance from Jones, not
allowing him to fight in close.

Alcine pounds
Bojorquez!
by Dave
Spencer,
FightNews Canada
Joachim
Alcine showed fast hands and extreme confidence in
dispatching Carlos Bojorquez in just seven rounds of
their NABA and WBC International championship title
matchup before a capacity crowd at the Montreal Casino
Saturday afternoon. Alcine wasn't able to put Bojorquez
down but was dominant in winning every round on the
judges' scorecards as he cut up the tough Mexican over
both eyes and the bridge of his nose. Bojorquez was able
to absorb everything Alcine had to offer but had nothing
left when he finally decided to call it quits after
seven. The win puts Alcine at a perfect 22-0 (15 KO) and
should put the 6th ranked WBA and 15th ranked WBC
super-welterweight even further up the ladder. Bojorquez
drops to 23-7-6 with the loss.

PREVIEW
Alcine-Bojorquez Saturday!
By Dave Spencer
www.fightnews.com
Everythings' a go for the Joachim Alcine-Carlos
Bojorquez clash at the Montreal Casino this Saturday
afternoon. It should be the toughest test to date for
the WBA 6th ranked Alcine as he battles Mexican born
Bojorquez (23-6-6) who had undefeated Tarvis Simms on
the canvas in his last fight before suffering a close
split decision loss. Alcine is coming off a sixty-second
blowout of popular fan favourite Stephane Ouellet in
front of a stunned Bell Centre crowd. On the line will
be Alcine's NABA junior-middleweight title along with
the vacant WBC International crown. Alcine hopes to
solidify his rating in the WBA where he sits on the
heels of superstars Fernando Vargas and Ricardo Mayorga
and hopes to move up in the WBC where he is currently at
number 15. Bojorquez meanwhile hopes to turn his
fortunes around against a top-ranked contender; his last
three losses have come against impressive opposition of
the previously mentioned Simms, champion Kassim Ouma,
and former champion Verno Phillips.

FEATURE STORY
Alcine-Bojorquez for NABA!
www.fightnews.com
Canadian jr. middle prospect Joachim Alcine is set to
battle Carlos Bojorquez of Mexico for the vacant jr.
middleweight WBC-Int. title and for Alcine's NABA crown
at the Montreal Casino on February 12. The bout could
have major implications in the 154lb division, as the
WBC has already stated its intentions of stripping
champion Winky Wright leaving the throne to interim
champ Javier Castillejo. Castillejo will now have to
defend against the next highest rated available boxer or
against a boxer selected through an elimination bout.
Alcine is currently ranked #15 by the WBC and would
definitely move up with a victory - and thus closer to a
possible elimination bout, especially with many of the
division's top names expected to move either up or down
in weight. The Haitian-born Alcine (21-0; 14KOs) was
originally expected to face #6 ranked Alex Bunema, but
in Bojorquez he found someone not that different: as a
matter of fact, Bojorquez and Bunema fought to a
ten-round draw two years ago. Bojorquez (23-6-6; 19KOs)
also brings the distinction of being the last man to
face and defeat Pernell Whitaker. Meanwhile, Alcine is
coming off the most emotionally-charged win of his
career, a 60-second blowout of local fan favourite
Stephane Ouellette.
----------
Action gets underway at noon at the Casino, and tickets
start at $50 and are available through GYM and
Admission.com. Undercard action is to include Sebastien
Demers and Ian MacKillop in separate bouts with the TVA
network broadcasting the action throughout Canada
starting at 4pm.

El Gallito beats Apachito for NABA Flyweight belt!

Against his
toughest opponent yet, El Paso’s Cesar “El Gallito”
Lopez validated his top ten contendership with a
lopsided unanimous decision over proven Juarez veteran
Alejandro “Apachito” Moreno, to snag his second NABA
belt.
This time, it was
for the flyweight version, Lopez’s true weight class.
While the fight
did not pan out to be a high-volume barnburner, never
evolving past the methodical technical bout it was,
Lopez used his lightning-quick speed and skills to win
round after round.
Moreno had the
reach on the smaller Lopez, yet never utilized it.
Letting Lopez zip in and out, like a crazed hornet,
Moreno plodded forward without letting his hands go.
I had the first
two rounds tentative enough to be 10-10, after which
Lopez took control, changing angles on Moreno and
scoring solid lead left hooks, then making Moreno miss
with his counterpunches.
Lopez buzzed in
and out, putting rounds in the bank, while the crowd
grew restless for some toe-toe-toe. At the end of the
sixth, they traded shots to close the round, but settled
into the same ol’ routine in the 7th.
Finally, in the
Eighth, they duked it out, but Moreno’s uninspired
attacks were no match for Gallito’s hard left hooks,
both up and downstairs.
The safe, tactical
plan continued in the 9th and final round, giving Lopez
the win with scores of 98-92 twice and 98-93.
I had it 100-92
for Lopez.

Dated: February 2nd 2005
NOTICE OF NABA CHAMPIONSHIP
BOUT
The Championship Committee of
the North American Boxing Association wishes to announce that it has
received an official request to sanction the title bout listed
below. In accordance with our by-laws, all NABA titles must be waged
between the two highest rated available contenders in descending order
of their current position in our rankings. Should any boxers or their
representatives feel that they have valid grounds to support that they
have been unduly left out of the process of the title challenge in
question, they are requested to file their protest in writing to our
championship committee, no later than February 11th 2005, failing
which the bout will be officially sanctioned without further
notice.

IMPORTANT NOTICE
In accordance with sec.16. (c) Sanctioning Organizations, of the
"Muhammad Ali Boxing Bill" the NABA is requesting that a
representative of every boxer rated among the first 15 spots in our
organization send their contact info, including mailing and/or e-mail
address to 1350 York Mills rd.#103 Toronto Ontario Canada M3A 1Z9
or
gmartinez@nabasite.com, so

|
IMPORTANT NOTICE
In keeping with
the recognition by the boxing community of the important
role which the NABA can play in helping boxers to reach
world-class status, our executive committee has decreed
that, effective October 1, 2004, all boxers
from North America who are included in the WBA ratings
will automatically be included at the top of the list of
NABA monthly rankings in their respective weight
categories, and in the same sequence as they (North
Americans boxers) actually appear in the corresponding
monthly WBA ratings. This new format will result in
the NABA giving full recognition at the top of their
monthly ratings, to all North American boxers who are
listed in the WBA ratings, and in the same sequence.
Furthermore, the NABA ratings will henceforth consist of
twenty (20) boxers, rather than fifteen (15), which had
been the rule prior to this change. This new format is
designed to enhance the prestige associated with NABA
titles, while continuing to provide promising prospects,
a solid stepping stone for their world title ambitions,
which is the primary goal of the NABA. |
