Unbeaten WBA 105-pound champ Etsuko Tada (9-0-2, 2 KOs), 104.25, a fast-moving southpaw, kept her belt for the sixth time when she pounded out a nearly shutout decision (100-90 twice and 98-92) over ex-WBC 108-pound ruler Nongmuay Kokietgym ( 10-3-3, no KO), 104.5, Thailand, over ten hot rounds.

Tsunami Defends Title
with TKO

TOKYO, May 18 (AP) - (Kyodo)—Japan's Tsunami Tenkai successfully defended her WBA super flyweight title for the fourth time, stopping Petchsairung Looksaikongdin of Thailand in the third round on Tuesday.

Tenkai sent Petchsairung to the canvas with a left in the second round before the referee stopped the fight 1 minute, 25 seconds into the next round at Korakuen Hall.

"I'm relieved the match is over now," said Tenkai, who was in anguish over her ring name Tsunami after tsunami caused by a massive earthquake ravaged Japan's northeastern coastline on March 11.

"I decided not to change my name because I want to send a message that we don't forget about what happened and people who passed away. I'll try to get better and stronger to face the world's top fighters in the future."

The 26-year-old from Okinawa improved her career record to 8-0, including three knockouts.

Tada beats Zamora to unify

By Joe Koizumi
Photo: Boxing Beat

Unbeaten WBA female champ Etsuko Tada (8-0-2, 2 KOs), a Japanese southpaw, impressively unified the WBA 105-pound championship as she cleverly and constantly kept punching interim ruler Ibeth Zamora (11-3, 4 KOs), Mexico, to win a unanimous decision over ten rounds in Osaka, Japan. Judges Silvestre Abainza (Philippines) and Dr. Michael Lee (Korea) both had it 98-92 and 98-93, and Chalerm Prayadsab (Thailand) 96-94, all for the defending champ Tada. Referee was Ferlin Marsh (New Zealand) who handled the fast-moving girls very well.

Tada, a quicker southpaw, took the initiative from the outset with her superior hand speed and shifty footwork with ease. Zamora started her engine no earlier than in round six, taking a point with her persistent body attacks. But Tada came back to win the seventh and eighth with her fine display of good footwork and sharp combinations. They shared the last two sessions with their last surges.

It was a very good fight, but Tada’s speed and skills prevailed so that she successfully unified the WBA female 105-pound championships.

Yesica Bopp Defeats Carina Moreno

Published: Jan 30 2011 by: ProBoxing-Fans.com

Last night in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Former four-time world champion, Carina "La Reina" Moreno (21-3, 6 KO's) was unsuccessful in her quest to capture Yesica Bopp's (14-0, 5 KO's) WBA and WBO Light Flyweight titles. "Yesica Bopp is a great champion and she won the fight,” said Moreno. ”It's very difficult to travel thousands of miles away from home and get a victory.  When I get back, I'll look at the fight and see where I can improve."

While Moreno gave a gallant effort in defeat, it was Bopp's defense, footwork and overhand rights that were the keys to success.  Moreno had her moments, but it wasn't enough to get the win.  The victory solidifies Bopp as an elite fighter in her division.

Although the scorecards read 100-91, 99-91 and 98-92, it seemed as though the fight was a bit closer.

Team Moreno has mentioned that her next fight will not be taken on short notice as it was in this fight.   Look for Moreno to be back in action sometime later this year.

WBA 2010 Awards Banquet

By Boxing Bob Newman

On a beautiful Nicaraguan night at the Crowne Plaza Hotel’s poolside, the WBA held their annual Best of the Year Awards Banquet, with honors bestowed in several categories, honored the late Nicaraguan legend Alexis Arguello and his fellow native Nicaraguan champion boxers and awarded belts to the newest WBA champions.

In the most touching moment of the night, a posthumous homage was paid to Nicaragua’s first world champion and their most legendary- the late Alexis Arguello.  The award was accepted by the hall of famer’s daughter Dora Arguello, who broke into tears while accepting the red, white and blue WBA Super Champion’s belt.  It was the untimely passing of the ring icon that prompted the WBA to choose Managua, Nicaragua as the site of this year’s convention. Braekhus Destroys Lauren

WBA, WBC & WBO female welterweight champion Cecilia Braekhus clinched her 15th win in as many fights, destroying Mikaela Lauren (6-1, 1 KO) – in seven one-sided rounds. In the seventh, two right uppercuts followed by a left sent Lauren down. She scrambled back to her feet but the referee called the bout off. “This was a great win for me,” Braekhus said. “I want to keep improving, keep winning titles and defend my collection against the best fighters out there.”

Lauren, a former famous Swedish swimmer, has conquered the rankings in a heartbeat and is currently listed as BoxRecs number two, second only to Braekhus. “This is going to be a tough fight,” Braekhus said. “Mikaela Lauren has been very successful in her short boxing career. She might not have the best boxing technique, but she certainly has a superb condition and a lot of power. I am prepared for a hard challenge and I will defend my titles.” MORE

Tenkai keeps WBA female belt

By Joe Koizumi

WBA female super-fly champ Tsunami Tenkai (14-3, 5 KOs), 113.75, Japan, kept her belt as she battered ex-national amateur bantam titlist, compatriot Kayoko Ebata (3-3, 2 KOs; amateur 14-3), 113.5, and pounded out a unanimous decision (98-92, 97-92 and 96-93) over ten frames on Monday in Saitama, Japan. Tenkai, making her second defense since dethroning Chinese southpaw Xian Xi Yang in February 2009, took the leadoff with her trade-mark left hooks to the elusive challenger. Ebata, a 34-year-old footworker, attempted to counter the onrushing champ and took a point in round four. Tenkai, however, overpowered the lanky counterpuncher all the way from the fifth onward. Ebata was penalized a point for pushing down the champ’s back-head repeatedly midway in the eighth. The full champ Tenkai, 25, will face WBA interim ruler Carolina Gutierrez of Argentina in her next defense. Promoter: Yamaki Promotions in association with Watanabe Promotions.

The popular Hyun-Mi, who defected with her family from North Korea in 2004, won the WBA belt in her second pro fight at the age of 17.

Q&A: Susi Kentikian

Four days after her split decision win over Nadia Raoui, unbeaten WBA/WBO/WIBF female flyweight world champion Susi Kentikian is taking it easy visiting her grandfather Hayk from Los Angeles and enjoying her new pink WBO weomen’s championship belt.

Susi, have you looked at your fight on video yet?

“Yes, that was a very close result. And when I saw it on TV, I admit that Nadia made a super strong impression. But I didn’t feel her pressure in the ring.”

It was not a dominating victory this time – what do you attribute that to?

“In the last year I’ve boxed against four world champions and won four times. That says something about the matter. I wasn’t in top form, which I had expected of myself. Still the win was justified.” MORE

Choi Hyun-mi, teen boxing champ, spurs fellow North Korean defectors to keep fighting

By Geoffrey Cain Geoffrey Cain – Wed Feb 17, 3:14 pm ET

Seoul, South Korea – For the thousands of North Korean defectors living in hardship around the world, champion boxer Choi Hyun-mi has become their Mohammad Ali.

The young woman who fled from North Korea has become one of South Korea’s most revered faces since winning the 2008 featherweight championship of the World Boxing Association, a title she still holds today.

Her promoters call her the “Defector Boxer Girl,” and the media have dubbed her the “Million Dollar Baby” from North Korea, a reference to the 2004 film starring Hillary Swank about a boxer who rises from penury to fame.

“She overcame all the difficulties and achieved her dreams, though she might have faced discrimination as North Korean woman,” says Kim Kyung-soo, a defector in Seoul, using an alias because he fears government reprisals against his family still in North Korea. “She motivates me to get over the difficulties in front of me.” Read More

North Korea defector fights her way to the top

AFP - Teenager Choi Hyun-Mi, struggling to make a new life in South Korea after fleeing North Korea with her parents, literally fought her way to the top.

Choi, who switched from amateur to professional boxing to support her family, is now the World Boxing Association (WBA) women's featherweight champion -- still deeply in love with the sport she took up in Pyongyang at age 13.

"I think I was born to box," said Choi, now 19, recalling how she switched from track after a school boxing coach in the North Korean capital persuaded her to visit the gym.

Fellow 13-year-olds were working up a sweat punching bags, but to Choi their efforts looked beautiful. She then had to win over her parents, who were firmly opposed to a daughter in the ring.

"So I recorded a video of me defeating other fighters and showed it to my parents after practising for three months secretly," Choi told AFP in an interview. Read More

Tenkai keeps WBA 115lb belt
Calls out 'Killer Queen' Kentikian

By Joe Koizumi

Busy-punching and fast-moving Tsunami Tenkai (14-3, 4 KOs), 114, very impressively kept her WBA female super-flyweight belt as she swept all rounds with a beautiful display of speed, skills and power in scoring a nearly shutout decision (100-90 twice and 99-91) over game and durable British challenger Shanee Martin (9-5-1, 5 KOs), also 114, over ten fast rounds on Sunday in Kobe, Japan. The referee was Firlin Marsh of New Zealand. Tenkai, a cute 25-year-old Japanese champ, simply stunned the audience who hadn’t seen so many female boxing bouts by showing her excellent form, reflexes, quickness, skills and stamina. Even this reporter previously thought that Tenkai was only a non-stop warrior, but she completely changed her image tonight so that our people realized that we might be proud of Tenkai being the most outstanding female boxer.

It was amazing that Tenkai so finely penetrated the tight guard of the taller and skillful Martin with stinging lefts, left-right combinations and quick combos upstairs and downstairs. The champ had the fading but still game challenger at bay in rounds five, seven and eight. Tenkai tried to finish Martin with a flurry of punches, but the resilient challenger refused to go down until the end.

Her manager/promoter Toshihiro Yamaki, formerly a well-known kick-boxer in 1980s, proudly said, “This was one of her best performances so far in her career, but Tenkai is still improving technically. Our target is her confrontation with WBA flyweight champ Susi Kentikian in Germany, as Tenkai, though being the WBA 115-pound ruler, is a legitimate 112-pounder. Tenkai may be the first boxer to defeat the unbeaten queen Kentikian.” Tenkai may move down to 112 pounds to fight the German champ with both WBA fly and super-fly belts on the line.

Tenkai’s good jabs and solid rights had the pretty Martin’s left optic badly swollen as if it was a black egg. Her improvements on speed and precision tonight might carry her status to the top among our female boxers.
